When they offer you free domain they take ownership of the domain and you can use that domain as long as you use their service but you are not authorised to transfer this domain elsewhere. So either their service are good or not you can’t do anything because your domain already stack there.

2 ) Pay domain and hosting separately at same hosting provider
When you pay domain separately meant you own the domain and you can manage the domain at domain control panel as provided by this hosting company. So this hosting company also domain registrar and normally they will allow you to register the domain without hosting account. If the company Not Allow you to register your domain without hosting then don’t go to this company because they don’t have facilities to manage your domain.

The conclusion, it’s doesn’t matter you buy a domain and hosting at same company if they can allow you to manage the domain. If you not happy with their service, you can move your file and database elsewhere but your domain still at same company. You only have to login to domain control panel and make a change to nameserver but for some company they can help you to change the name server if it’s difficult for you to make a changes.
